A collage of pictures of people of different races in different positions.
Time:
5PM - 8PM
Venue:

Michigan History Center

702 Kalamazoo St.

Lansing, MI 48915

Description:

Join the Michigan History Center and Citizens for Prison Reform for a FREE viewing of Faces of Mass Incarceration followed by a panel discussion led by family members of incarcerated individuals. The documentary reveals up close and personal family stories from across the U.S.--including one from Michigan - that were thrust into supporting their loved ones who became incarcerated.

The general public often does not realize the burdens those on the outside experience while trying to support and stay connected to their loved ones on the inside. Much unmerited shame, embarrassment and fear is associated with the prison-family, causing most to withdraw and isolate from the mainstream community. That self-imposed isolation denies the general public the opportunity to understand the impact of mass incarceration on incarcerated loved ones, families and our communities as a whole.

Doors open at 5 p.m.; program begins at 6 p.m. Admission is free. Click here to RSVP.

This program is presented as part of a series on incarceration in Michigan and the United States, in conjunction with the Michigan History Museum’s temporary exhibition, States of Incarceration: A National Dialogue on Local Histories. The exhibit runs until May 19, 2019.

The States of Incarceration program series, which is made possible in part by a grant from Michigan Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, features presentations and films that explore all aspects and perspectives on incarceration in Michigan and America. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in presentations do not necessarily represent those of the Michigan History Center, the National Endowment for the Humanities or Michigan Humanities Council.
