There are people that commit crimes however due to the nature of the criminal justice system. Ultimately punishment for a crime is not crime prevention. As the country has been moving in a direction for 10+ yrs. I can't really recall a situation where someone being incarcerated for a crime helped stop the crime in question from occurring slot of people are imprisoned for a crime they didn't commit and due to the nature of prisons alot of people in jail become criminals.
