I don't think this is a yes or no question. Unfortunately, poverty, abuse, substance abuse etc. damage some people early on, and they need to be in some institution. This is a minority of current prisoners, to be sure. But we need some facility/treatment/place for psychopaths. I say this from the experience of representing men convicted of murder and sentenced to death in my state.

Prisons do not make me feel safe because they do nothing to shape the face of crime in the outside and because I think we have a real problem with humans being abused at the hands of the state.

They have had no effect on substationally reducing crime, the prisons are full of people who have committed crimes that I do not feel threaten me to begin with, and they only target a certain type of criminals.

The carceral state only serves to beat folks down and creates us vs them.

Putting others in the place called "away" does not prevent the norms of our society from being reproduced.

They do not make a difference, and there is a high rate of recidivism.

I don't know how powerful they are as a deterrent for crime, violent or otheriwse

I don't see a direct connection between my personal safety and prisons. I feel like there are all kinds of violencea that I worry about as a black woman, my blood turns to ice every time I get pulled over by a police officer. Prisons don't do much to fix those aspects of personal safety that I am most concerned about.
