Decriminalizing Students

In this 2015 interview, Manuel Criollo, Director of Organizing for The Labor/Community Strategy Center in Los Angeles, revises the notion of a school-to-prison pipeline. By describing police presence in schools (Los Angeles Unified School District has its own police department), ticketing for truancy and tardiness, and a culture of punishment for student behavior, he shows how certain students—disproportionately black and brown—are prepped and conditioned for entry into the criminal justice system.
